HARDSHIP LICENSE - LIMITED DRIVING PRIVILEGE - LDP

A hardship license is also known as a limited driving privilege in some states such as Missouri.

A person often looks at getting a hardship driver's license when their driving privilege has been suspended or revoked as a result of accumulating too many points or receiving a citation for driving while intoxicated.

You're eligible to receive a hardship driver's license when you cannot get your driving privilege reinstated but need to be able to drive for employment or other necessary reasons such as medical appointments

What is a Limited Driving Privilege (LDP)?

In many states, if you cannot get your driver's license back, you may get such privileges unless you have certain convictions or losses of license on your driving record. Some convictions or loss of license are so serious that an LDP may not be granted.

According to some state laws, the reasons why you cannot get a hardship license or a Limited Driving Privilege - LDP - include, but are not limited to:

  • Already received an LDP within the last five year period.

  • Conviction for a felony involving the use of a motor vehicle.

  • Conviction for leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident (does not include municipal or county convictions).

  • Two or more revocations for refusing a drug or alcohol test.

  • Disqualification of commercial driving privileges (Note: only a non-commercial limited driving privilege may be issued in this case).

  • Conviction for driving a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs or controlled substances.

  • Multiple convictions involving alcohol or narcotic drugs.

  • Revocation for failure to pass a driving and/or medical examination as required by the Director of Revenue.

  • Suspension for an unsatisfied motor vehicle accident judgment (until payment has been made and/or compliance has been met).

  • Suspension for failure to pay ticket(s) - (until payment has been made and/or compliance has been met).

  • Less than 30 days have been served of a suspension/revocation that resulted from a conviction for driving while intoxicated (DWI) or driving with excessive blood alcohol concentration (BAC).

  • Less than 90 days have been served of a revocation for refusal to submit to drug or alcohol test .

  • Less than 30 days have been served of a Department of Revenue administrative alcohol suspension for driving a motor vehicle with a BAC over the legal limit.

  • The entire period of revocation has not been served of a Department of Revenue administrative alcohol revocation for driving a motor vehicle with a BAC over the legal limit.
Other names for a Hardship License are: Limited License, Limited Driving Privilege, Work license, Day license, and a Cinderella license.

States have varying and specific laws. If you are wondering if your state allows a hardship license, consult a traffic attorney in your area.
