License was Suspended - Found out on my way to jail

by Jessica P.
(Ringgold, Ga, USA)

I've lived at my current adress for more than 5 years now, never was told my license was suspended.

The two judge I seen and paid didn't even advise me of anything but the payment I owed.
One Judge took my license for a month and even gave it back and sent me to defensive driving, knowing both charges against me.

The second ticket I was served actually told me the wrong court date until I called. Once I finally got off the right day I went to the hearing plead guilty and paid up everything, he told me nothing as well.

Finally, almost a year later, ive been skippy happy everything was over and done until this morning at 4:50am on my way to work. I was pulled over after trying to pass a car 15 miles over the speed limit so I could turn on my brights and not blind anyone on the dark road.

I stopped, gave my license and told my reasons for why I did what I did, five minutes later im hancuffed and on my way to jail for suspentioned licence. Im trying to find out what I should do next considering I feel I have no option now that Im school thats in another county as well as my job.

I abided by the laws well the laws that was told to me since im 18 and somewhat ignorant to the implied ones, but Im certain I tried to do right by showing and paying just to end right back where I started.

I also still have a D license and was told I need a "c" one today so I could go back and from work, once again ignorent, how do I find about all this? What do I do? I dont want anything more on my record.

Why was your license suspended?
by: Your City Lawyer

Every state is different. However, a license bureau will always notify you that your license is being suspended. They mail it to the address that THEY HAVE ON RECORD FOR YOU. Everyone in every state is required to keep their mailing address updated with the licensing bureau that issued their license - (and most people don't know that you can be ticketed for not having a current address listed).

It doesn't matter if you've lived there 5 years, if you have not formally updated your license, don't expect to get any notices about anything.

Secondly, the licensing bureau is the authority as to what happened with your license and what needs to be done to fix it. Call them and follow up on what they tell you needs to be done to get your license fully reinstated. Don't ever assume it is done until you see the paperwork. Make sure!

Paying tickets (pleading guilty to them - or no contest, same thing) will incur points on your record. You can pay your tickets, rack up points, and the points suspend your license. So, people can think they're doing the prudent thing, and they aren't.

Consult a lawyer - many offer a free consultation. It's much easier to do it right than to try to undo a mess.

Call the license bureau in your state and they also will tell you free of charge what the problem is with your license.

Be persistant and sort it out. It won't go away, but will only get worse. These issues will follow a person from state to state as well.

(This is general problem-solving information related to traffic ticket issues and does not all relate to the specific question asked)

Thanks for your question.
