RED LIGHT CAMERA LOCATIONS? Here's What You Need To Know
Red light camera locations? It may not matter to you and I'll give you some reasons why. As with most legal issues,
prevention is the best course to take.
Yes, it does appear that the trend to use cameras to monitor traffic violations is here to stay. And not
just for people running or "rolling through" red lights. Cameras have been placed by law enforcement to monitor speeding,
illegal left turns or turns on red, as well as toll booth locations.
It's a rare day that we don't get a call from a client outraged about a ticket issued by a camera!
As with most legal issues, prevention is the best course
A Camera Gave Me A Ticket:
I was driving on the freeway through a lot of traffic taking someone to the airport in Chicago. Not being familar with the area, I
got "trapped" in the "pre-paid-drive-thru" lane at the toll booth and had to keep going. So, I didn't pay the 65 cent toll. My $20 citation came in the mail
about a month later with my license plate in clear view of the camera. No, I don't make a regular practice of
running 65 cent tolls. But, sometimes stuff happens. And when it does, what can you do about it?
Radar detectors are generally not very effective at pointing out red light camera locations or
against photo radar (speed cameras). This is because the photo radar signal is usually weak, and the photo radar gun
is usually positioned at an angle that limits the range of detectors.
A radar detector will NEVER provide an alert for
red light camera locations unless it is a GPS or radar detection system loaded with specific software that is continually updated
as to camera locations - generally by users clicking or confirming the position of red light or speeding cameras.
Another option is to obscure your license plate. There are a couple of methods of doing this. One is by a plastic cover that
distorts the numbers for the camera lense. Another method is a spray that subdues, masks, or again distorts the viewing of the
license plate numbers for the red light or speed trap cameras. These methods when utilized correctly are often effective at
making your license plate unreadable to the cameras.
However, in some states, actually in most states it's unlawful to display on any vehicle a registration plate which is obscured in any manner which
inhibits the proper operation of an automated red light enforcement system or visual identification.
What states is it illegal? Well, states seem to have varying laws that may be loosly interpreted. An example is that it may
be a matter of the officer's opinion as to if the license plate's numbers/letters are "obscured" or not. Check the current
position of your state's ruling on this legal gray area.
Whatever the case, cameras issuing traffic tickets is bound to be a fact of life. Most traffic attorneys offer free consultations
so if you get a ticket in the mail issued by a "camera", the best bet is to call a lawyer's office before you send a reply.
