State Seeks Child Support from Father
State Seeks Child Support from Father: My son and his girlfriend have a son together. They hit a rough patch and were living apart for awhile, during which she collected TANF.
They are back together now, raising their child, and she reported the changes, which ended the TANF payments, cut the food stamps, etc. Missouri DSS has now issued a child support order for $200 against my son, even though he is living in the home and already supporting his little boy. When he calls DSS they tell him to "seek legal counsel."
He spoke to several attorneys and the cheapest he could find wants $1000 up front, which he does not have to spend.
Any advice? I don't understand how they can make somebody pay child support to the state (they said it would not be passed on to her in any way) when he is already there, supporting the child.
The first thing I would want to know is what period of time is the $200 for? It may well be for a timeframe in which the couple had not yet reconciled.
